Jilapi-Muri: an affront to food or an adventure of taste

As BracU students, we believe in diversity with unity, not divergence with anarchy. From arguments to agreements, we may sort out many problems through a friendly discussion or a symposium. But ain’t we dunked into the debate over one common thing every year? The combo of jilapi-muri? For some, it may be an exploration of flavours, for others it’s an explosion of firecrackers in the head and stomach.

Sajid (Junior, CSE) who supports the ‘No muri-jilapi mix team’ shared his story where he stood still with his principle even after an unexpected situation. Last year, he heard from his sweetest senior crush in the university cafeteria, “Sugar, spice, and everything nice!” and mixing muri-jilapi with other spices. Without the chemical ‘X’ his mind just exploded. His crush crushed him from inside and his feelings became the statue of Melancholy. Sharing his story he added, “I never tried this and I’ll never do. What’s next, mixing biryani with payesh? How can a sane entity have a taste bud like this!” However, next to him, his friend Mountashiour (Junior, EEE) continued with a completely different perspective. “Jilapi with muri makha is fun if there’s enough kacha morich. The outburst of spice and sweet, Ahh, heavenly! ” Then he patted his friend and said, “You should try this for once, buddy. Don’t be a spreadsheet.” But the buddy chose to pull off his mime face and left for his 8 AM class.

So which team are you on? Do you judge or feel judged when your tongue sensors work differently than others? You may love to see the unity of sweet, salty, and spice whereas it’s normal if someone is comfortable taking a single flavour at a time. It’s just a collaboration of muri-jilapi. Embrace it like your present or ignore it like your ex.
