A journey of excellence: In Conversation with Dean Mahbub Majumdar
“Personal success is stupid,” says Professor Mahbub Majumdar (Dean, School of Data and Sciences), challenging conventional notions of achievement. Recently, the BracU Express team interviewed Professor Majumdar to learn about his vision for improving the quality of education and research at Brac University.
Professor Majumdar’s academic journey includes prestigious institutions such as MIT, Stanford University, the University of Cambridge, and Imperial College London. Upon returning to Bangladesh, he joined Brac University in 2014 and later became Chairperson of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. He also convened the BracU-ICTP Jamal Nazrul Islam Winter School 2025, a groundbreaking event that welcomed renowned theoretical physicists to Bangladesh. Professor Majumdar also coaches Bangladesh’s National Mathematical Olympiad and the Gonitkonya Girls Math Team.
Reflecting on his experience at BracU, Professor Majumdar remarks, “It’s been a journey of recalibrating standards.” He proudly notes how BracU now attracts some of Bangladesh’s brightest students.
Professor Majumdar aims to build a strong homegrown research culture empowering local talent to address the challenges of the Global South and beyond. “If I can achieve this, I will be content,” he humbly shares.
Despite many obstacles, Professor Majumdar strongly believes in the potential of young students and faculty members at SDS. He advises the students to ask questions, seek help from the faculty, and provide constructive feedback, reassuring them, “The faculty members are here to help you.”
BracU Express thanks Professor Majumdar for generously sharing his time and insights. Watch the full interview on BracU Express’s YouTube channel.
