A day among the diplomatic spectrum
On November 8th, The International Association for Business Communicators (IABC) hosted the Diplomats’ Meet 2024 at our Brac University. A national-level event with over 100 participants from 33 institutions, including Dhaka University, Chittagong University, and many others. One of the organizers, Sehazad Siam (junior, CSE), states, “This event aims to become a connecting bridge between the newcomers and experienced debaters. Our focus towards creating an environment of learning by eliminating competition distinguishes us from general MUNs”.
The event commenced at 10 am and was inaugurated by Ms. Tahsina Rahman, Joint Director of Student Life. It was followed by remarks from S.M. Sazidur Rahman, president of IABC. The session officially began with Mr. S.M. Azharul Islam and Mr. Mohammad Shafkat Aziz, both renowned names in the MUN circle, taking the stage as the President and the Secretary-General of the model UNGA, respectively. Mr. Islam and Mr. Aziz see this event as a platform to promote peaceful co-existence while preparing young people for the hyper-competitive world.
The debate was focused on solving the Russia-Ukraine war modeled on the 11th Emergency Special Sessions. Participants were divided into delegation teams for 37 countries. The enthusiastic opening statements resembled the insides of the UN chambers. After a brief lunch break, all reconvened as the Secretary-General gave speeches interlaced with informal sessions. The main aim was to submit draft resolutions and reach a meaningful solution. With an unexpected twist, the eventful day they concluded when Russia and Ukraine approached the podium together choosing to reconcile, with China and Netherlands as the mediator. The US, unhappy with the turn of events, demanded compensation right away.
The daylong event ended around 7pm. Mohammad Shafin Al Abdullah, a student of NSU and an experienced debater remarked this event as a great learning opportunity and confidence booster for newcomers. Nishat Anam Rubab (junior, CS), a novice, shared, “This is my first time and though I was nervous, the seniors in my team were very helpful in guiding me”. Everyone left with the bundle of new bonds, insights and experiences along with a certificate.
