Commemorating visionary Sir Fazle Hasan Abed’s legacy – Copy

Commemorating the fifth death anniversary of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed KCMG, the visionary founder of BRAC, the exhibition gallery on 19th December housed framed photographs of Sir Abed and artworks by students, paying homage to the man’s legacy. Additionally, the infographic posters provided insight into his journey and showcased his contributions. The Registrar of BRAC University, Dr David Dowland, and the Founder and Director of the BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL,) Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, visited the gallery.

In his memory, the Executive of BRAC Institute of Educational Development (BIED), Dr. Erum Mariam, held “আবেদ ভাই কে ঘিরে কথকতা” as she reminisced his extraordinary life and his dedication towards improving people and reflecting upon her work journey in BRAC from 1992. From working towards eradicating poverty to entailing his vision of reducing the dropout rate using One Teacher One Classroom School, an accomplishment that offset his journey towards establishing Brac University, all due to his diligence and innovative frugality. The speaker ended the session by reminding our university students to carry on his philosophy, as Dr.Munima, one of the participants, said, “We are all part of him and his legacy.”

The last portion of the event was held at the auditorium hosted by Tahsina Rahman, Director of Student Life. It commenced with speeches by the Pro-Vice Chancellor of BracU, Dr. Syed Mahfuzul Aziz, and the Dean of the School of Architecture and Design (SoAD), Dr. Fuad Mallick, followed by BracU Monon and Cultural Club’s songs. In between, Dr. Dowland recited some lines from Shakespeare, remembering Sir Abed’s fondness for poetry. Continued by a brief dialogue moderated by the Director of Communications, Khairul Basher. The panelists consisted of women who were part of social projects. Wasema Farzana (Senior, ESS), one of the panelists, highlighted, “Sir Abed’s inspiration motivated us to build this project”. Finally, prices were given for the art and chess competition held in honor of Sir Abed. One of the winners, Ibtesam Mahbub (Junior, CSE), shared, “His passion for art and relentless pursuit of social justice inspired me to make this drawing.” The event finally came to an end with faculties singing one of his favorite songs, “একলা চলো রে. Dr. Rubana Ahmed (Proctor, BracU) summed up the day, depicting, “No better way to commemorate his memory.”
