Discovering Potential Beyond Your Dream University

We all remember the feeling of checking the acceptance list of our dream university and not finding our name on it. Heartbreak, feelings of worthlessness, and despair combine to create one of the most awful experiences. All the hard work, sacrifices, and sleepless nights feel wasted. But life didn’t end there. It was just a chapter that closed, and a new one began.

For many of us, our first choice of university wasn’t private, primarily influenced by the mindset that public universities were more valued and prestigious. This mindset left us feeling lost upon entering a private university. However, we soon faced a barrage of quizzes and assignments, leading to midterms, presentations, debates, and finals—quickly dispelling the myth that private universities were “easy.”

First-semester students may be feeling the same pressure, both academic and mental. It’s easy to fall into unproductive habits and watch grades slip. However, overcoming these challenges is essential for academic success.

Acknowledge the disappointment of not getting into your dream university- let yourself feel that—but then reflect on why that particular university mattered so much. Was it you or the societal and familial pressure? Consider that your current university has the same possibilities for growth and success.

Once you start studying here, focus on classes from day one to prevent lectures from piling up. If you can’t focus on your studies at home, go to the university’s library. Connect with peers and join clubs that align with your interests. Reach out to mentors or faculty for guidance. Counselling is also a fantastic way to express your feelings and gain another perspective. Instead of cramming for hours, take small, intentional breaks to refocus. It’s also important to note that continuously doing so numerous assignments and quizzes can lead to an unproductive loop, hindering both focus and rest. Engaging in activities like exercising, watching your favourite series, or enjoying a snack can provide the mental reset you need.

Remember, one setback does not define your future. It’s a moment in time, not a lifetime. What you choose to do from now on does. Trust yourself and the process- you’ve got this!
