Office of the Proctor

Over the past few months, Brac University students have noticed posters strategically placed around campus campaigning against all forms of harassment and bullying. These posters were issued by the Office of the Proctor, which has been working tirelessly to make BracU a safe and secure space for all its students. However, many students are still unfamiliar with the office and its functions. BRACU Express recently had the opportunity to sit with the Proctor’s office and converse with the people behind it, in order to better understand their roles and objectives.

What is the Office of the Proctor? What is their job?

Simply put, the Office of the Proctor acts as a protector and enables an easy life for a student on campus. While BracU yet has to elect a proctor, 4 assistant proctors have undertaken official responsibilities since October. From spreading awareness around campus with the ‘No Means No’ posters to dealing with harassment complaints first-hand, their work involves creating a safe environment within the campus. Any kind of disciplinary offence within the university is dealt with by them, which includes exam offences.

What kind of issues does the Office of the Proctor deal with?

They deal with any kind of harassment, be it sexual, stalking, bullying, theft, or cyberbullying. If you are a student facing harassment or even intimidation, you should inform the Office of the Proctor. Their advocacy encompasses not just students, but all people affiliated with BracU. Meaning if any lecturer, student, security, or any other staff member faces harassment, they should always turn to the proctors’ office. A student who is facing any form of harassment at the hands of a teacher or any other member of staff should also contact the Office of the Proctor.

Are they a scary and administrative body?

Absolutely not – if you are innocent and abide by all of the institution’s codes of conduct. While they may take action towards an accused party once proven guilty, the proctor only works as an intermediary between the complainant and the BracU authority. If a student has any complaint, they should not feel scared or hesitant to approach them, as they can be relied on for maintaining the student’s confidentiality. The Office of the Proctor has the authority to take measures to fully examine a case, which includes retrieving CCTV footage. Depending on the gravity of the situation, they can inform the university authority who can then take appropriate and congruent measures.
