The Art of Selfcare – Reel v/s Real

Type Self-care when you open Pinterest, Instagram, Threads or Youtube. You will be bombarded with images of girls doing yoga, drinking matcha on solo dates or men at the gym, at a salon, spa or some faceless 20-step shower routine. Joining the 5am club or taking a designated self care day somehow magically fixes all the exhaustion life throws at you. If they do not, there is some book out there that will upgrade your life. But do they, actually?

Not everything that sparkles is self-care. The only advice I’ve found that actually works?

“Dance before you leave the house—it changes the way you walk out of it.”

That, along with occasional journaling sessions to release the quiet buildup of negative energy, has done more for me than any influencer’s spa day ever could. A solo walk to calm the overstimulated mind, or designing moodboards in the middle of the night—those quiet rituals speak louder than trends. Because, isn’t self-care about knowing yourself?

Are you a morning or a night person?  Would you prefer your thoughts organized or do you want to scream through the mess with your weightlifting? At the end of a hard week do you want to hibernate in a hole or a bonfire with those who bring stand up comedy to your life? There is no right or wrong way of taking care of yourself. Self-care isn’t what looks good on camera (unless it is a digicam where everything looks good). I personally found matcha bitter so I chose the sweet ol’ latte.

Social media has made the art of self care very specific.  But do not forget that Cinderella had shown us years back, one shoe does not necessarily fit all.
