Brac University Launches Net Zero, Plastic-Free Campus Initiative
On February 17th, Brac University partnered with Bangladesh Sustainability Alliance (BSA) and BRAC to initiate the “Net Zero Project and Plastic-Free Zero-Waste Campus.” The project aims to eliminate single-use plastics and promote sustainable alternatives, positioning the university as a Global South’s sustainability leader. Partners like Unilever and Marico Bangladesh support the initiative and focus on recycling programs and waste reduction.
BRAC’s Dr. Md Liakath Ali and BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar signed a memorandum of understanding. Dave Dowland, the Registrar, made the opening remark, and Sankalita Shome, the Chief Coordinator of BSA, gave the speech.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, praised the university’s drive to promote sustainability and involve educational institutions in improving the environment. She emphasized the need to change habits to combat climate change and reduce ecological footprints.
Tamara Hasan Abed, Chairperson of the BRAC University Board of Trustees, said environmental conservation should be a core curriculum across all disciplines, as it is a shared responsibility. The professor said the university is dedicated to waste reduction, resource management, and environmentally friendly plans. He promotes sustainable development through education and action orientation.
The Social Impact Lab of Brac University also hosted the Zero Waste Challenge, a poster contest to raise seed funds. Colleges and universities showcased their projects, received seed funds, and shared insights on a zero-waste lifestyle. The poster influenced BSA and BRAC outreach awareness programs for responsible consumption and water reduction.
