Mahbuba’s defiant journey to Chevening

Just three months after graduating, Mahbuba Kamal (Alumnus, SoL) defied the odds to secure the prestigious Chevening Scholarship. The Chevening Award, one of the most competitive UK government scholarships, which recognizes future leaders globally, is not simply a scholarship. To her this is pivotal, helping her in establishing her career and ambitions.

Inspired by Chevening Alumni since her sophomore year, Mahbuba had prepared for 2.5 years, waiting until graduation to apply. Since Chevening is considered a mid-career scholarship, many told her she was “too ambitious.” Despite the lengthy process, high competition of over 102,274 applicants and a challenging acceptance rate of 3%, she persevered. Mahbuba feels, “The hardest part was maintaining patience and hope, trying not to get discouraged.”

As an OSUN Scholar, Mahbuba studied at CEU in Vienna and represented Bangladesh at international forums, including UN events. She co-founded the Bangladesh Society of International Law (BSIL), creating a platform that connects students across the country with international experts. Her time at the International Humanitarian Law and Migration Program of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) shaped her understanding that law is not merely a set of provisions or the prestige of a black coat, but a powerful tool to protect and defend human rights across borders. Currently serving as a research associate at the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) and now honored as a Chevening Scholar, Mahbuba continues her advocacy journey with a strong focus on women’s rights and equality.

When asked what advice she would give her younger self, she responds: “Never let anyone decide or limit the height of your dreams. Dream and work for it; you can reach the highest heights.” She also credits her friend, co-founder, Fahim Abrar Abid, her fellow BracU graduate, OSUN Scholar, and now an Erasmus Mundus Scholar, as one of her greatest inspirations.

Looking forward, she aims to build a strong community of Bangladeshi leaders in international law through BSIL. To aspiring scholars, she advises focusing on personal passion, balancing academics with extracurricular and professional experiences, and remembering that it is never too late to begin.
