BracU Duburi’s Innovation Elevates Bangladesh in Robotics
Bangladesh has established its place on the global robotics map with BracU Duburi, the country’s first autonomous underwater vehicle team, which ranked 8th out of 58 international teams at RoboSub 2025 in Irvine, USA. They also received the Best Entrepreneurship Award, recognising their pioneering role in creating the country’s underwater robotics ecosystem. What started in 2017 with PVC pipes, improvised waterproofing, and secondhand electronics has grown into a project that embodies resilience and national pride. From being crowned the Best Rookie Team in 2022 to competing with the world’s best, they prove Bangladesh can now venture into the seas of innovation.
Behind this success lies a story of perseverance and growth. From testing in local ponds to trials in the Bay of Bengal, this team has evolved from makeshift prototypes to world-class systems powered by Doppler Velocity Logs, Jetson processors, and high-precision navigation tools worth millions in BDT. Yet, their true strength resides in purpose. BracU Duburi designs its AUVs for real-world challenges in Bangladesh’s waters, combining innovation with impact.

From hull leaks to electrical failures, setbacks were constant. With over 100 members, strong mentorship, and the support of Brac University, alumni, and sponsors, they turned difficulty into a stepping stone. They stand alongside global powerhouses like MIT, Cornell, and NUS — an inspiring leap from humble beginnings. Their achievement sparked the ‘Duburi Theme’, inspiring student robotics projects and a national robotics movement.
Their vision encompasses marine research, disaster response, and resource exploration. The team leader, Abid Mahmud (Junior, CSE), reflected, “Start small with what you have, embrace failure. Remember, Bangladesh can innovate at a global level.” BracU Duburi is living proof that with passion and persistence, students can change their futures and transform Bangladesh itself.
