In Conversation with Shameran Abed: A Remembrance in Legacy
In an exclusive interview with BracU Express, Shameran Abed, Executive Director of BRAC International and son of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, reflected on receiving the Independence Award on behalf of his late father.
Shameran called it a proud yet bittersweet moment in his father’s absence. He noted that Sir Abed would have regarded this award as recognition of BRAC’s mission to serve people rather than personal achievement. From post-liberation war rehabilitation in 1972 to addressing challenges like disaster relief, education, and healthcare across Africa and Asia, BRAC’s journey under his father showed unwavering dedication. Moreover, Sir Abed championed social entrepreneurship and a holistic approach to development, shaping BRAC to outlast any individual entity.
His vision extended to BRAC University, rooted in liberal arts and lifelong learning. Remembering his father as a humble and visionary leader, Shameran encouraged students to carry forward his legacy of empathy, global citizenship, and lifelong learning.
BracU Express thanks Shameran Abed for generously sharing his time and insights. Watch the full interview on BracU Express’s YouTube channel.
