Littering inside BracU touches the sky.
Brac University has been the talk of town because of the stunning new campus. Just a
year in, the rooftop recently opened for the entire community. The rooftop area took longer to
be completely ready for access as it covers two separate floors and has different areas for
various activities. Even though most of the areas on the rooftop seem to maintain cleanliness,
one major spot is finishing the race last in this matter. With a field full of greenery and warm
sunlight bouncing off the grass leaves, it is a shame litter can be seen glistening amidst all.
Setting foot on the grass, your eyes will meet the undesirable scenario of used tissues,
plastic disposables, and bottles lying on the evergreen grass. Not only that, uneaten food
remnants and takeaway boxes sometimes also take part. Even though there are several
dustbins all around the rooftop and by the sidelines, people are still littering.
“It is disgraceful for people to be lazy for not using the dustbin,” says Nawshin Nawal
Khan (Senior, ESS). Zunayed Zedan (Senior, BBA) said, “Coming to a dirty rooftop to relax
after doing classes the entire day takes the fun out of it”. Talking to the cleaning staff, a clear
idea was gathered on how they spend almost an hour cleaning the field once the rooftop
closes every day. They further commented on how sometimes litter can be seen on the
escalator or the stairs leading to the rooftop.
The solution to this issue has to be for authorities to be strict. Imposing hefty fines
and implementing CCTV cameras around the field will help to maintain a spotless and more
enjoyable environment. In addition to that, guards patrolling the area should hold anyone
accountable if they litter in front of them.
Pictures of the new campus rooftop circulate on social media more often than not as
students and faculties take pride in the beauty and modernism of the new campus. Conserving
the charm of the rooftop is a duty for all regardless of the reprimand.
