Navigating Bangladesh’s economic future at the BBS colloquium 


On May 14th, Brac Business School (BBS) hosted an informative session titled “Bangladesh Economy and Development Strategy: Challenges and Prospects” by renowned economist Dr Salehuddin Ahmed (Professor, BBS). The seminar was graced by remarkable figures such as Professor Mohammad Mujibul Haque (Dean, BBS), Dr Najmul Hasan (Associate Professor, BBS), and other faculty members and students.

Professor Ahmed is a prominent economist, best known as the 9th Governor of the Bangladesh Bank and later as the Financial Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh. He has held senior academic positions at the University of Dhaka, North South University, and Brac University. Professor Ahmed obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s in Economics from the University of Dhaka and later earned his doctorate from McMaster University in Canada. He specialises in various fields of economics and has published several books and research papers on them.

Professor Haque inaugurated the event with a warm welcome to the guest speaker. Professor Ahmed’s speech emphasised the importance of macroeconomic stability as the foundation of national development. Moreover, he discussed inflation, the importance of strong leadership. and practical governance when it comes to the economic development of a country. Finally, he focused on foreign policy, private sector development, and disaster management, especially for disaster-prone countries such as Banglades

Professor Ahmed’s speech was illuminated with overwhelming appreciation from the audience, comprising esteemed faculty members, along with students. Dr Najmul Hasan (Associate Professor, BBS) commented, “This session taught me the importance of budgeting when it comes to economic stability.” Equally enlightened, Tahmid Zarif (Freshman, ESS) said, “It was a great privilege to be in the presence of such a knowledgeable person.” The session left the audience with important insights and broader perspectives about the intricacies of national governance.
