Shanen Gomes

Shanen Gomes’ (Senior, SLS) compelling journey shows how curiosity and perseverance can birth something meaningful. Initially choosing Biotechnology for specializing in pharmaceuticals, Shanen’s academic journey expanded beyond laboratories, evolving into a pursuit blending science and leadership.

Despite her leaning towards medicine earlier, Shanen’s exposure to extracurricular platforms broadened her perspective. She says, “Extracurricular activities helped me broaden my thinking capabilities to realize and solve real world problems.” This became a defining substance in her journey. Shanen’s most noteworthy contribution to campus life is her role as founding member of the Brac University Environment Club (BUEnC). She envisioned a space where students could learn about climate change and work on solutions collaboratively. “The global crisis on climate consequences is something I believe youth should be more aware about.” Shanen’s work in Brac University Social Impact Lab further reflects her commitment to community development. She gained experience as a Project Associate and later as an Impact Associate and Climate Wing Head. Describing her role she says, “My work included identifying problems and designing solutions.” Her first initiative, Project C13, focused on promoting climate awareness and sustainable lifestyle among students. “Me and my team did workshops on sustainable recycling with materials that’d go to waste.” Despite the project not sustaining, it inspired her to establish the Environment Club and reach a wider audience.

Shanen also attended semesters abroad in Bard College, USA and Central European University, Hungary. She credits BRAC being a part of OSUN network for getting the opportunity in Bard College. “The exchange semester was life-changing,” she says. From professors helping her adjust to interesting courses like “Argentinian Tango”, she explains despite being overwhelming initially, she was able to adjust well. In terms of academics she says, “Compared to BracU, the courses were more rigorous and more writing and research oriented.” She adds that she learnt to apply her theoretical knowledge in labs there. Studying a Civic Engagement course in Central European University, she notices a stark difference compared to her first international experience. “Teaching style, culture, people and other aspects were different,” she added. Be it communicating with people of different cultures or living independently, she remarked that her international experience contributed to her personal and academic growth extensively.

Shanen believes that Bangladesh’s youth have a crucial role to play in addressing climate challenges. Her advice to fellow students is simple yet powerful: “Be curious to learn new skills and knowledge and never stop trying.” Through resilience and openness to learning, she proves that impactful change begins with taking the first step.
