UK trade envoy graces Brac University campus

On October 9th, the United Kingdom’s trade envoy, The Rt Hon. Baroness Winterton of Doncaster DBE was welcomed to Brac University. Tamara Hasan Abed (Chairperson, Board of Trustees) and Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar (Vice-Chancellor, BracU) along with members of the university’s senior leadership team received her with warm greetings.

The UK trade envoy explored the campus, which combines eco-friendly design, sustainability and modern learning facilities. The main purpose of her visit was to further talk about the collaborations in higher education between the two nations. She met with the university’s leadership team to expand some already flourishing academic partnerships between BracU and UK institutions. The most mentionworthy initiative is the joint PhD programme between SOAS University of London, of which The Rt Hon. Baroness Winterton of Doncaster DBE has been a big supporter.

BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) with Departments of Economics and Development Studies of SOAS jointly launched this PhD program in June earlier this year, aimed at pairing global development themes and blending field work with extensive research. It is typically a three-year programme with a choice of being based at Dhaka or London, according to the student’s requirements. Furthermore, this programme focuses on critical themes such as sustainable governance, inclusive economic growth and social development while holding the crown of BracU’s first mentionworthy overseas collaboration at doctoral level.

This visit highlighted BracU’s contribution to opening many doors of opportunities that our country can seize in order to expand the prospects of higher education. After all, it also underscores the importance of BracU’s dedication to the UN SDGs.
