On July 10th, Brac University Economics Club (BUEC) hosted a panel discussion titled “Economic Resilience of Bangladesh: Role of Fiscal Policy” to address the incoming economic challenges. Dr. Wasiqur Rahman Khan (Chairperson, ESS) officially commenced the event as he introduced the guests individually and praised the student organisers for their efforts. Each of the guests was asked questions aimed at their respective fields. Professor Rahman stated that “For the first time since Bangladesh’s independence, the national budget has been reduced but the social safety net budget has been increased by 14%” as he discussed how the fiscal policies could be refined to improve these programs and adjust for the imminent LDC graduation and foreign trade.

Mohammed Nurul Amin highlighted the negligent and corrupt conduct in the banking sector of the previous regime and the importance of strategic, cohesive monetary and fiscal policies. Tahera Ahsan talked about the shortcomings in fiscal policies for foreign trade and suggested sector-specific measures, such as preferential trade terms. Dr. Syed Abdullah Mamun (Professor, ESS) stated that “The demands of the people, of the economy and of the politicians should have congruence to achieve the economic resilience which is Bangladesh’s main objective through fiscal policies.”
The event ended with a candid question-and-answer session for the general students. One of the organisers, Israt Zahan Prioty (Senior, ESS), expressed that “It was an honor to engage with esteemed experts who are actively shaping the economic landscape. As we face complex economic challenges, I remain committed to fostering spaces where knowledge and ideas can collaboratively bring in lasting change.”
