Easter Exams: Diversity Dilemma at BracU

BracU proudly celebrates a campus life enriched by diverse cultures and backgrounds, creating a vibrant sense of belonging. Yet, this commitment to inclusivity is frequently tested when the rigid academic calendar clashes with the religious observances of minority groups. For Christian students, Easter is not just a Sunday with bunny-themed decorations; it is a time for liturgy, family, and reflection. Nevertheless, Easter Sunday is an optional holiday and is visited by not only the Easter Bunny, but also midterm examinations.

Jerin Agnes Rozario (Sophomore, EEE) expressed, “Since I had my exams on the day, I missed Easter, especially my favourite part, which is adoration. I’m still grateful to God that I could attend Saturday Mass with my family.” It is a poignant dilemma, where the need to be a dedicated student is at odds with the need to honour sacred traditions.

Simultaneously, the administration faces the logistical challenge of fitting a comprehensive curriculum into a tight semester while adjusting for unpredictable world events. With limited weeks and thousands of students, academic continuity is crucial to secure the timely completion of a semester.

However, moving towards an inclusive future does not require an overhaul of the system, but rather an academic calendar respectful of all beliefs. While Jerin reported being supported by her faculties regarding absence for religious obligations, Oishi Moni (Senior, CSE) stated, “Bangladeshi Christians unfortunately ended up accepting the situation, even though this is the most sacred day spiritually.”

The university can bridge the gap between its inclusive values and academic priorities by ensuring that high-stakes assessments are not scheduled on major religious dates, as students often fear increased difficulty or hassle that comes with make-up exams. True inclusion is achieved through dialogue and practicality, ensuring that no student feels their faith is a hurdle to their education.
