BracU celebrates Occupational Health and Safety Day
On 28th April, Brac University Health and Safety Club (BUH&S Club) hosted a seminar at the auditorium titled “Safety Uplift: Campus Edition” to celebrate the Occupational Health and Safety Day.
Dr. Sharmind Neelotpol (Professor, School of Pharmacy) delivered the keynote speech, followed by notable professors setting up a panel discussion. Dr. Shahidur Rahman (Professor, ESS) shared stories from organizations excelling in worker safety while Dr. Munima Haque (Associate Professor, MNS) stressed strict adherence to laboratory safety protocols regarding hazardous materials, prioritizing continuous awareness and regulation in research laboratories.


Dr. Jebunnesa Chowdhury (Assistant Professor, MNS) talked about the broader aspects of protection. Dr. Mahboob Hossain (Professor, MNS) promoted environmentally conscious lifestyles, with devices such as gas detectors at home to prevent accidents. Meanwhile Dr. MG Sarwar Hossain (Professor, EEE) introduced useful mobile applications for safety measures. In between, the students interacted with the panel and had an active conversation regarding safety in the workplace.


Md Mehdi Mahboob (Head of Safety & Security Operations, BracU) and S M Shahidul Islam (Senior Manager of Safety & Security Operations and Co-advisor, BUH&S Club) were present as guests. Just after noon fell, participants and panel members received their recognition. A 5 minute quiz was held with 12 questions. The rule of the quiz was that those who got the right answers in the shortest time would receive the awards. 5 top participants received their award from Dr. Mahboob Hossain (Professor, MNS), including a certificate.
All this while, BUH&S Club arranged stalls outside the auditorium. The seminar did not continue onto day two, but the stalls and its festivities did with one stall even hosting a marble game where roaming students dropped by for a quick game. All in all, BUH&S Club delivered a two day event that raised safety awareness, bringing liveliness to the campus.
