BUCHC hosts anniversary tournament

On August 25th, the Brac University Chess Club (BUCHC) organized its signature Intra University Chess Championship tournament at the Exhibition Hall. The event brought together 65 official participants, including many students, faculty, and staff members, alongside Dr. Dave Dowland (Registrar, BracU), Tahsina Rahman (Joint Director, Student Life), and Tanvir Sobhan (Co-Advisor, BUCHC and Senior Lecturer, ESS), as chief guests.

The event was part of the club’s 10th anniversary celebrations, serving both as a competition and a platform to promote chess and to identify players who may not yet have been exposed to the competitive side of the game. Freshers in the club were actively involved, along with alumni and faculties joining in. The tournament format was a 7-round Swiss League with a 5 minutes + 5 seconds increment time control. The winner of the tournament,  Hrishin Talukder (Sophomore, EEE), delivered a flawless 7/7 score, winning all his matches. In the women’s category, Samirah Alom Sarah (Senior, CSE), the winner for the best female player of the tournament, impressed everyone with a thrilling tiebreaker match that had the entire hall closely following every move.

One of the chief organizers, K M Ramim Azim (Junior, CSE) expresses his gratitude at being able to host such tournaments, saying, “It has been quite a joyful and insightful experience, and it made for some unforgettable memories.” The winner Hrishin Talukder says, “Drawing on my top-10 finish at the 2022 nationals, winning the Boardmasters tournament felt like both a personal achievement and a reminder that hard work and consistency always pay off.”

In the near future, BUCHC intends to extend its reach by hosting another FIDE Open-rated tournament, like earlier this year, that will be joined by the top chess players across Bangladesh.
