Dr. Jabia Mostofa Chowdhury’s journey in excellence

From Dhaka to Texas, the story of young scholar Dr. Jabia Mostofa Chowdhury is a real epitome of patience and diligence. Despite excelling in board exams, she didn’t gain admission to a public university. Unbowed, she enrolled in the EEE department at Brac University which was propelled by the encouragement of her father and the reputation of the university. Dr. Jabia also aspired to pursue education overseas which became a reality when she got a full scholarship to complete her PhD at the University of Memphis, where a supportive mentor inspired her towards biomedical and computational modeling. After her PhD she joined as a postdoctoral associate in the University at Buffalo.

Explaining her challenging transition from EEE to Biomedical, she expressed, “I had to work extremely hard to catch up, diving deep into biomedical literature, running simulations, and even conducting animal experiments.” Dr. Jabia currently works at the Texas A&M University-Texarkana as an assistant professor juggling motherhood, teaching and research. She assists with various courses and is passionately committed in research, focusing on computational modeling of drug actions in eye diseases, like glaucoma, and Age-related Macular Degeneration.

To those seeking research opportunities, she advises: “Passion and perseverance matter more to set students apart. Reach out, ask questions, take initiative.” While not currently recruiting, she welcomes curious students as the university prepares to launch its Master’s in Engineering in 2026.

Truly, Dr. Jabia Mostofa Chowdhury inspires cross-border learners to look at failure as guidance to success and to remain undeterred when faced with a new challenge.
