Ohio State University Professor delves into the world of mathematics

On September 11th, the School of Data and Sciences (SDS) hosted the inaugural distinguished lecture by Dr. Saleh Tanveer (Professor, Ohio State University, USA) titled “Mathematics and its ‘Unreasonable’ Effectiveness in the Sciences and its Potential Role in Tomorrow’s Bangladesh”.

Professor Tanveer is a prominent mathematician who received his doctorate in Applied Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology, USA. He received multiple prestigious awards for his research activities. His research interests include Asymptotics, free boundary problems, partial differential equations, fluid mechanics and turbulence. In addition to research and teaching, he held multiple editorial positions in prominent journals.

In his talk, Professor Tanveer beautifully chronicled how ‘unreasonably’ mathematics works to describe the world around us, alongside how it contrasts with other mathematical sciences. He moreover depicted how mathematical thinking is an essential skill. Furthermore, Professor Tanveer shared how this skill would help Bangladesh advance in multiple sectors.

Participants of various majors from different universities attended the session. They took a deeper interest in the topic, asking curious and analytical questions. As Professor Tanveer shares, “They were quite a bit into it. I feel they were paying attention. It is always good to talk to those who are paying attention”

Professor Tanveer was delighted by this series of sessions arranged by the SDS. He shares, “I was inspired to see the level of the talks. I have seen various talks from renowned universities; it’s quite comparable.”

Sayeda Tashnuba Jahan (Lecturer, MNS) organises these sessions under the title “Merul Badda Talks in Maths and Physics” to introduce young minds to the world of research in fundamental sciences. She shares, “We feel honoured to have had Prof. Tanveer as our guest this session. We saw many enthusiastic students and faculty members from different disciplines participating in today’s talk. We hope to garner more inclusive talks like this one in the future.”
