Sourav’s data-driven flight to Politecnico de Milano
Sourav Biswas (Alumnus, CSE) became one of only four Bangladeshi recipients of the prestigious Invest Your Talent in Italy (IYT) scholarship this year, securing him a fully funded admission into Politecnico de Milano, ranked 98th in the world along with a €1,000 monthly stipend.
Drawn to Brac University for its reputation in computer science and healthy learning atmosphere, Sourav soon came under the tutelage of faculties like Farig Yousuf, Golam Rabiul, Rafeed Rahman and nurtured his passion for the subject. The environment and elective course choices at the university ignited his curiosity for data science and machine learning. Along with academic studies, Sourav honed his industry skills by interning at Data Crafters and working as a Junior Data Analyst at Zylo-Lab. Additionally, he became a Microsoft Certified Data Analyst which further enhanced his credentials.
“The application procedure was truly a journey of self-learning,” Sourav remarked as he talked about the obstacles throughout the way, since the nine-month long process required him to get outside of his comfort zone, from navigating complicated visa procedures to simultaneously researching topics like land tax and creating an affidavit. The struggle was worth it, however, as Sourav is now pursuing his MSc in Computer Science and Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. “When I received an offer from Politecnico di Milano, it felt like a dream come true,” he recalled. The academic excellence, cutting-edge research and international environment always attracted Sourav.
Sourav also shared insights for aspiring juniors as well. He emphasised on developing practical skills in addition to academics, “Recruiters care about whether you know tools and frameworks like React, Express, Django, Power BI, or PySpark etc. However, maintaining a decent CGPA is still important, especially for scholarships.” Sourav’s practical skills, certifications and strong motivation made him stand.
Moving forward, Sourav plans to work with Data Science and AI in Europe and contribute to building intelligent and data-driven solutions. His journey of navigating challenges and coming out triumphant serves as an inspiration to aspirants trying to make their dreams cross borders.
