Project Amra: Empowering underprivileged children to have a self-reliant future

‘An initiative from us for our kids is “Project Amra”.’ An inclusion initiative, an initiative to confidence. This is a step towards making every kid in the country feel equal and complete on their own so that they can navigate the world and face its challenges with self-respect and dignity.

Murshidul Alam Bhuiyan, Niaz Rahman, Sami Al Jabir Mahin and Faria Binte Azad from BRAC University found  Rajia Sultana (East West University); Bahar Uddin (United International University); Shariful Islam Hridoy (BUP); Mehedi Hasan (JU) and Jarin Tasnim Limisha (Daffodil International University) one fine afternoon through a project. One discussion led to another, and Project Amra came into existence. With all 9 of them very passionate about doing something different for the underprivileged children, they joined hands to create sustainable support for them. Project Amra gives children a sense of independence, skills, and the tools necessary for these children to thrive in the world without having to depend on anyone. Others might be taking care of these angels through shelter and provisions, while Project Amra tries to instill the mindset of self-sufficiency among them. Teaching them skills ranging from beadwork to staging dramas to hands-on first aid to English-speaking Project Amra aims to create a world where orphans and underprivileged children do not have to suffer for a decent survival.

Project Amra’s team has always been very proactive, diligent, and strategic in their approach to the project, how they will carry out their role in society, and their course of action. Before beginning their fieldwork, they carried out surveys in various orphanages and other orphan support centers to find out what they could do differently to give birth to a new mindset in orphans, the mindset of growth. Their efforts indeed paid off as what began only based on passion now has weekly classes with a huge responsive turnout occurring at the DISS while actively locating other prime locations to expand their social services. Apart from their team of 9, they are recruiting volunteers around the country to join them as they advance in their plans to take children of the hills and northern parts of the country under their wings.

“We want to eradicate the term ‘minority’ because they are not different or weaker than us. They are just like us, so we want to give them a fair chance at life. One orphan at a time”, says the team. They believe their position at Project Amra is only just at the beginning. With such growing support,t they can expand their area and zones of programs and reach their ultimate goal. The goal is to create a lasting change in the lives of those who need it the most. The goal is to make every child an empowered individual who matters enough to make their mark on the world.
