APNIC hosts seminar on magic behind the Internet

On May 22nd, the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) hosted an enlightening session at the Brac University auditorium, offering students a comprehensive look into the inner workings of the internet.

The session started with a brief introduction to the fundamentals of networking. It emphasized Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) and APNIC’s vision of a secure internet in the Asia-Pacific region, also stressing the urgency of the need to move from IPv4 to IPv6 as IPv4 addresses are running out and IPv6 has a larger address space. The session also covered Internet Governance Forums as well as the policy cycle, explaining how policies are tabled at APNIC.

One of the major points of discussion was Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) and Route Origin Authorizations (ROAs). RPKI was described as a security measure against route hijacking through the verification of the authenticity of IP address holders. ROAs allow IP holders to select the autonomous systems that can advertise their routes, leading to better global routing trust. The discussion also covered Reverse DNS, which translates domain names into IP addresses, and how it is crucial to diagnostics, email verification, and network visibility.

The program concluded with an engaging online quiz, rewarding winners with gifts. Reflecting on the session, Sadia (Freshman ,CSE) remarked, “I learned a lot from today’s session as we got a peek into major issues behind the scenes workings of the internet. Moreover, winning the prize for being attentive in the session came as a brownie point.”
