BracU students break the silence with an anti-rape protest

On March 4th, BracU students voiced outrage against injustice by holding an anti-rape protest in front of the main gate of the campus, as Bangladesh witnessed a surge in cases of sexual violence against women and children. The protest symbolised solidarity with the victims and demanded justice against the perpetrators.

A large group of people participated in the protest by making their own symbolic placards and chanting slogans. When asked about her motivation, Faria Islam Tisha (Sophomore, ESS) answered, “No affiliation or immoral agenda should account for the violation of human rights in this country. There have been many protests, but we hope to make a small contribution.” The slogan “আমার সোনার বাংলায় ধর্ষক এর ঠাঁই নাই, we want justice”, echoed the sentiments of the general public in the wake of these cases.

The protest was joined by Professor Mahbubul Alam Majumdar (Dean, SoDS) and  Dr Mahboob Hossain (Professor, SLS), who stood beside the students in this call for justice till the very end. The protest garnered attention from renowned media outlets, further strengthening the purpose and motivation for this protest beyond the university walls.

Afiya Jannat Annana (Senior, SHSS) shared, “Due to recent wave of rape cases, there have not been any exemplary consequences for the rapists, with almost nothing being done about the safety that we have been promised. So we hope to bring a change through our collective efforts.”

This protest reminds that such cases would not be met with silence, and people will remain resilient even if their voices are suppressed or calls for justice denied.
