BracU’s new merch store: Hate it or love it?

For weeks, Brac University students have been curious about the space that was being rapidly set up opposite the entrance of the Multipurpose Hall. Neatly organized shelves, an impressively decorated interior, and a prominent counter at the front all sparked curiosity and anticipation. A new wave of conversation started almost immediately after a large banner “MERCHANDISE STORE” appeared right behind the reception counter.

Although BracU’s new merch store is yet to be officially unveiled, student reactions to this development have been strikingly polarizing. While some are appreciating and celebrating the establishment of the merch shop as a way to express campus spirit, others are expressing concerns over priorities. The idea of a merch store holds symbolic value when it comes to the student community and campus spirit. The merchandise items represent a shared identity and sense of belonging and pride.  An official source also created an avenue for reliability.

However, not everyone feels the same way. This initiative also raised questions about priorities and the execution of the store. Umama Samiha (Junior, CSE) expressed both her excitement and doubts about the store saying, “ I think the space could’ve been used for something that we need more like a larger female prayer room or a lounge. I am still excited to check it out once it opens but things there will probably be out of my budget.” Another student, Anan Rafi (Freshman, CSE) stated, “It seems more focused on capitalizing on the idea of fostering student identity.”

The debate over the merch store is not about the store itself but about priorities and balance. More pressing demands for student and community welfare could have been addressed. Ultimately, the future opinions regarding the store heavily depends on the execution of it.
