Farhat Tarannum’s Home Built On Tunes

For some people, home is not the four walls they live in. Rather, it is bound by tunes of a language few people can converse in. Their art not only heals the heart but also immerses them in the timeless rhythms so deeply they cannot remember a time when it was not a part of their lives. Such is the story of Farhat Tarannum (Senior, CSE), who grew up in an environment of creative passionates where the craze for music flowed into her veins forever.

Farhat spent her childhood listening to her mom and uncles singing or composing beautiful classic pieces. When her friends suggested during the COVID-19 lockdown to share her art with the world little did she know more than 37,500 pairs of ears would appreciate and find solace in her melodious voice on songs ranging from Hindi and Bengali classics to English songs like Goo goo dolls and Until I found you there are times she feels overwhelmingly happy about the huge responses and requests and love that drops in her socials. Surprisingly, the most listened-to songs are the old classics, which she feels is because people have listened to them for so long that they exist as sources of comfort, overcoming generational boundaries. And not only that, the minimal gear and homely setup of her videos make it impossible to not feel at home while drifting away to the golden era. However a very unique piece of art on her channel is ‘A letter to baba’ composed by her uncle on the occasion of Father’s Day to appreciate the silent heroism of all the fathers. When asked about it, she gave a shy smile, admitting that it is very special to her heart because of how close she is to her father.

Being a cover music artist for over the last 4 years, Farhat feels this industry is very welcome to the up-and-coming musicians. Not only are there opportunities for them to shine but people are also very warm towards the fresh voices. However, she offers a word of wisdom to all aspiring musicians: “ authenticity.” Not only will it help them resonate with their audience, but it is also what people need the most in their lives: genuine connections. And cover music is as close to the truth as music can offer.
