BracU Spring Chess Festival ignites challenges through fervor
This February 7th, the Brac University Chess Club ( BUCHC) unveiled the awaited event for the chess enthusiasts community: the BracU Spring Chess Festival in the Multipurpose Hall of BracU. The enthralling tournament featured around 180 participants, not only from our university but from various country institutions. Dhaka University, IUT, and SUST were part of the tournament, alongside multiple others. Dr. Dave Dowland, the Registrar of Brac University,y and Yesmin Begum, the National Women’s Chess Champion 1985-1986, were present as the chief guests of the event. The rapid tournament was o rounds with a 0+5 time format. The tournament witnessed the participation of some of the highest-rated and titled players, and non-rated players got their chance to gain their FIDE rating.

After nine rounds of rapid chase, the tournament winner was selected based on the highest points. Fide Master Syed Mahfuzur Rahman won the 1st position, Ananta Chowdhury (student, Biotechnology) from Brac University was 2nd, and Mostafa Sajid from Rajarbag Police Line School & College secured the 3rd position. Tahmidul Haque (CSE), Tasnia Trannum Orpa (Biotechnology) were the top from BracU. The prizes were awarded by Dr. Dave Dowland, Yesmin Begum, Tanvir Sobhan (BUCHC advisor, Senior lecturer, ESS,) and Chief Arbiter MD. Haroon Or Rashid.

BUCHC shares that the promotion of competitive chess games at Brac University is the primary goal of organizing such events. They also see this as an opportunity to showcase the club’s ability to host an International FIDE Open Rapid Rating tournament. These tournaments also give the best players of BUCHC a platform to play against the country’s best players. Special guest Ayesha Begum says, “Even though chess can be played through devices nowadays, I believe playing face-to-face is important for improving rising players.” The club believes these events have enhanced the BracU chess culture and will do so in the future. BUCHC looks forward to organizing a grander and more competitive tournament soon.
