BracU student Crowned Champion at Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman Memorial Chess Tournament
On January 3rd, the Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman Memorial Rapid Rating Chess Tournament was held at the University of Dhaka, arranged by Dhaka University Chess Club. BracU students showcased their extraordinary flair in this prestigious tournament.
Among almost 300 participants, including one Grandmaster, two International Masters, and nine Fide Masters, Anata Choudhury (Senior, MNS) secured the unbeaten Champion title with 8 out of 9 points, including 7 wins and 2 draws. Tahmidul Haque (Freshman, CSE) became the top performer among 1800-2000 rated players with 7 out of 9 points. The tournament was held in the Swiss league pairing system with 9 rounds.
Anata Choudhury has been playing competitive chess since 2017. He owned the title “National Player” for two consecutive years, 2022 and 2024, with a live ranking of 11th in Bangladesh. He also led the Brac University Chess Club (BUCHC) as president in 2023. Tahmidul Haque is a newbie exploring his passion in the arena of Chess.
Regarding his feelings about such a notable achievement in this competitive tournament, Anata said, “As this event was held in memory of legendary late Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman, the strongest and acclaimed sportsman of Bangladesh, this win has a special place in my heart,” Tahmidul shared, “It was a great opportunity to mingle with experienced players and with fun it helped me expand my learning horizon.” Both view their victory as encouragement for their fellow chess enthusiasts. They believe this achievement will help them be more confident, optimistic, and motivated in future tournaments.
