To love and hope: the HIMYM playlist

Despite its disappointing ending, we all have a soft spot for How I Met Your Mother. Sometimes (often), love swept Ted off his feet. Other times, Marshall, Lily, Barney, and Robin were the only ones standing between Ted and his fumbles. And hope? What would this show be without it? However, this beautiful story couldn’t breathe without its music. So, here are some songs I think were playing on the characters’ minds throughout the nine seasons. Hit play and cry yourself to sleep!

Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine) by The Crew Cuts: Remember the first time Ted saw Robin at MacLaren’s? This song must have been playing in his head at the moment, yearning to make her his own. https://open.spotify.com/track/10FNWxLB6t0kQ7SSXRcTU9?si=e174c1d4ee984844

I Know It’s Over by The Smiths: When Robin bluntly tells Ted that she did not love him back, time slowed for a second. Despite his desperation, Ted realised that no matter how intensely he felt for her, they just could not be the story they wanted the world to know. He shut the door on possibilities as he felt the soil falling over his head. https://open.spotify.com/track/3M2bD9SMYnJIPdrTKUnBd3?si=d81cc97cd8c84dc6

Ain’t No Sunshine by Bill Withers: Lily left for San Francisco, chasing her dreams but leaving the man of her dreams alone. His soul imploded as his sunshine abandoned him, leaving his heart sitting under the rain in the wet pavement. https://open.spotify.com/track/1k1Bqnv2R0uJXQN4u6LKYt?si=72ae366c6850407d

” I Like You “ by Dandelion Hands: Barney sits alone in his apartment, watching Robin’s news broadcasts as though they are his favorite drama, completely in denial regarding how deep his feelings — this song perfectly captures his confused emotions. https://open.spotify.com/track/4mlqHOqOXja92BT4M51lkj?si=86a0182e6b544cfc

Abhi Naa Jao Chhodkar: All the nine seasons, all the wrong turns, and all the heartbreaks finally lead Ted to Tracy. He finds her in the rain under a yellow umbrella, exemplifying the universe’s long yet beautiful promise. His heart sings this particular song because even a lifetime with her would not be enough. https://open.spotify.com/track/2oaKoKA8bvgWfBi9M8wEVJ?si=2af601b2954b40f4
