Jiboner Joygan: A legacy celebrated through Football

On April 27th, Brac University hosted a heartwarming football match on the occasion of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed’s 90th birthday. The event “Jiboner Joygan Football Match” was organised by BracU Sports in collaboration with the Football Club of Brac University (FCBU). The match brought together the players from Brac University and BRAC Primary and Secondary School, Faridpur. The event was graced with the presence of Dr David Dowland (Registrar, BracU),  Saif Hossain (Associate Professor, BBS and Advisor of FCBU), Tahsina Rahman (Additional Director and Head, Student Life, BracU), along with other esteemed guests and an excited audience. The students of the school and the university were divided into two teams: Durbar and Damal.

One of the key organisers, Md Al Farabi (Senior, CSE), stated, “The main goal was to build a bridge within the whole community and ensure everyone connected through football“. The players showcased enthusiastic performances, especially the young ones. As the match intensified, Team Damal continually impressed the audience by scoring goal after goal. The team won the match with a stark score of 4-0.

Shafin Mahmud (9th grade, BRAC Primary and Secondary School) scored two goals, demonstrating exceptional talent and dynamic teamwork. He described the match as an incredible and exhilarating experience, highlighting that football has been his favourite way of spending time. The best came from Israfil Islam (8th grade, BRAC Primary and Secondary School), the youngest player on the pitch, who both scored and assisted. “The win could not have been possible without collective effort and coordinated teamwork”, said Israfil.

With the joyous trophy presentation and shared sense of pride, the match came to a heartwarming end. With every pass and assist, the players honoured Sir Fazle Hasan Abed’s legacy of bridging gaps. As the match concluded, it left both the players and audience with vibrant memories and a strong sense of community.
