Spike Fest brings inter-university volleyball to campus

On December 7th and 8th, BracU hosted Spike Fest, the university’s first Inter-University Volleyball Tournament, organised by BracU Sports and Fitness in collaboration with Brac University Indoor Games Club (BUIGC), marking a first in private universities of Bangladesh. With a total prize pool of Tk 1,60,000, Tk 5,000 was awarded to Players of the Tournament in both boys’ and girls’ categories.

The competition featured eight boys’ teams and five girls’ teams from notable private universities. “We had concerns about attracting enough teams for the tournament. So, we were pleasantly surprised with the response from other universities as the success of the tournament largely depends on their participation,” explained Jewel Dutta (Senior Manager, BracU Sports and Fitness) when asked about the challenges he faced organising such a large-scale tournament.

After two months of strenuous practice sessions, BracU girls’ hard work paid off when they emerged victorious in a tough fight against DIU winning 2 out of 3 sets in the finals, securing a memorable victory for the university. The Player of the Final Match was Nabilah Hossain (Junior, CSE), while the Player of the Tournament was Amiya Monzur (Freshman, MNS).

When asked regarding the entire experience, Amiya recalled, “Being on the younger side, I was really happy that my coach, captain, and co-captain believed in me. As for being awarded Player of the Tournament, it felt amazing to be acknowledged for the work I put in. But as an individual who has always played team sports, it really reflects how well the entire team played together.”

Alongside the girls’ team, BracU boys’ team also delivered a strong performance, advancing to the semi-finals before being eliminated. In the boys’ category, DIU emerged as champions, remaining undefeated with a 2-0 win over International University Bangladesh (IUB). “I hope more tournaments like this are arranged which would benefit volleyball players while also enhancing Inter-University connections,” commented Tanveer Hossain (Player of the Final Match, DIU).

The tournament united BracU students as the crowds cheered for the teams, lifting campus morale. Overall, the tournament was a huge success, promising a bright future for inter-sports competitions at BracU.
